European Baseball Update: T&A San Marino Dumps Novara
ITALY – T&A San Marino remained unbeaten in the Italian Baseball League with a two-game sweep over Novara. With the wins, the Titans improved to 8-0 and stand atop Group B.
A trio of San Marino pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts to help San Marino claim a 4-2 win Friday in the series opener. Yoimer Camacho (1-0) collected the final nine outs to earn the win.
Fraylin Florian (1-0) and a pair of relievers teamed up for a 5-hit shutout on Saturday in a 9-0 victory. Francesco Imperiali homered and Sebastiano Poma had three hits to pace the Titans.
UnipolSai Bologna and Angel Service Nettuno both had the brooms out this past weekend to stay deadlocked in the top spot in Group A.
Bologna (5-1) outclassed Parma Clima 6-1 and 10-0 in a pair of easy wins. American import Rudy Owens (3-0) pitched six shutout innings in Friday’s encounter, and Andrea Pizziconi (1-1) tossed five scoreless innings in the series finale.
Nettuno (5-1) knocked off Padule twice, 4-1 and 7-2. Milvio Andreozzi (2-0) threw one-run ball over seven innings in the front end of Saturday’s twinbill, while Ronald Uviedo (1-1) struck out nine in the second game.
Reigning Dutch champion Curacao Neptunus extended its winning streak to four games with a sweep over De Glaskoning Twins. The Rotterdam-based club leads the Dutch Hoofdklasse with a .338 batting mark and 23 extra-base hits in six games.
Former minor leaguer Dwayne Kemp smacked three doubles and veteran southpaw Diegomar Markwell (1-1) worked six scoreless frames in Friday’s 10-5 victory. Benjamin Dille had four hits in an 8-4 win the following day, and Kevin Kelly pitched a two-hit complete game shutout in a seven-inning 16-0 victory in Sunday’s finale.
DSS stunned HCAW, 8-7, on Kevin Nieveld’s walk-off RBi single in the 10th inning on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep. Reliever Lars Vogelaar (1-0) tallied the final four outs to nab the win.
Jim Ploeger and Tim Niekerk combined on a one-hit shutout as HCAW rolled to a 17-0 victory on Friday night, and Kaj Timmermans scattered a pair of hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings in Saturday’s 4-1 win.
The Heidenheim Heidekoepfe captured a pair of lopsided wins against the Bad Homburg Hornets this past weekend to stay perfect after 10 games. The Heidekoepfe leads the German Baseball-Bundesliga South Division with a 10-0 record.
Heidenheim profited from 16 walks en route to a 11-1 victory Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader. Mitch Nilsson doubled and homered, while Clayton Freimuth (4-0) fanned 11 in six innings of work.
The Heidekoepfe completed the sweep with a 14-0 win in the second contest. Nilsson and Gary Owens both hit long balls and Johannes Krumm (0-0) struck out nine over six frames.
The Mainz Athletics (6-4) captured a pair of narrow victories against the Haar Disciples. Max Boldt hit two homers in a 6-4 win on Saturday, and American hurler Riley Barr (0-0) tossed a complete game to get the decision. American Ryan Bollinger (0-0) suffered the loss despite racking up 17 strikeouts.
Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg (6-4) collected two easy victories over the Saarlouis Hornets. Matt Vance homered to help Regensburg claim a 11-4 win in the first game of a twinbill. The Legionaere rolled to a 12-0 victory in the second game as Jonathan Eisenhuth worked five strong innings and Maik Ehmcke had two doubles.
The surprising Arrows Ostrava (8-3) dealt Draci Brno its first loss of the season Saturday in the opening act of a Czech Extraleague three-game set. Joseph Goodman (3-0) pitched eight effective innings and Michael Vykoukal had three RBIs as the Arrows nabbed a 10-3 win over the reigning league titleholder.
Draci (11-1) regrouped to sweep Sunday’s doubleheader, 3-0 and 10-2. Premek Chroust homered and Michal Sobotka and Petr Minarik combined on a eight-hit shutout in the first game, while leadoff man Arnost Dubovy tallied four hits and four stolen bases in a blowout win in the series finale.
The unbeaten Rouen Huskies (10-0) captured a pair of wins over Clermont-Ferrand Arvernes (3-7) on Sunday in a French Division I encounter at Cezeaux Stadium. The reigning league champion has a one-game lead over the Senart Templiers (9-1).
Esteban Prioul (3-0) tossed six innings of no-hit ball in a 5-1 win to help the Huskies take the first game, and both Larry Infante and Dylan Gleeson went deep in a 12-1 blowout in the second contest.
Senart claimed two not-so-easy victories over the MUC Barracudas (7-3). Matthew Brady’s three-run double in the ninth lifted the Templiers to a 7-4 victory in the twinbill opener. The visitors completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in the second game as Dylan Barrow (2-0) allowed one earned run with seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Barcelona (8-4) dealt Spanish Division De Honor frontrunner Tenerife its second loss of the season as Jonathan Kaplan, Roibert Decena and Pau Sancho all drilled homers in a 6-4 win. However, the Marlins (10-2) salvaged a split with a 7-4 victory in the second game as Gerwuins Velazco popped two homers and Leslie Nacar (6-0) went the distance while tallying 10 strikeouts.
Sant Boi (8-2) cruised to a pair of wins against Viladecans to stay in the hunt for the league title. Anthony Vizcaya (5-0) struck out 12 and scattered two hits and five walks over eight dominant frames in a 9-0 win in the first game.
Rafael Rivas and Victor Jose Lopez drove in four runs apiece to lead Sant Boi to a 13-2 victory in the second meeting. Eric Izquierdo (1-0) worked five innings to get the decision and Oscar Jimenez recorded the final six outs to earn his first save of the season.
