European Baseball Update: Unbeaten San Marino Tops Italian Baseball League
ITALY – T&A San Marino dealt the Rimini Pirates a pair of 3-1 setbacks this past weekend to become the lone unbeaten team in the Italian Baseball League. The Titans leads Group A with an unblemished 4-0 record.
Carlos Quevedo (2-0) and two relievers silenced Rimini’s bats on Friday night. The 26-year-old Venezuelan right-hander, who struck out six and leads the IBL with 16 strikeouts, scattered a run on three hits over six innings.
San Marino completed the two-game sweep the following day as Tommaso Cherubini (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen. Former Braves/Rays prospect Erik Epifano went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Junior Oberto worked two scoreless relief innings to notch the save.
In another IBL matchup, UnipolSai Bologna and Angel Service Nettuno split a two-game set. American hurler Rudy Owens (2-0) and reliever Filippo Crepaldi combined on a two-hitter in a 10-0 win on Friday night. However, Yuri Morellini tossed five shutout relief frames and Nettuno (3-1) dealt Bologna (3-1) its first loss of the young season on Saturday with a 6-4 victory.
Reigning Dutch champion Curacao Neptunus picked up its first win of the season with a 12-2 decision over the previously unbeaten L&D Amsterdam Pirates in action from the Dutch Hoofdklasse. Gianison Boekhoudt homered and Elton Koeiman (1-0) pitched six strong innings for the visiting squad.
Amsterdam (5-1) took the first two games of the series, 5-1 and 9-6. Danny Rombley’s two-run single highlighted a three-run sixth on Thursday, while reliever Daan Hendrix (1-0) recorded the four-out win on Saturday.
HCAW (5-1) erupted for five early scores to finish off a three-game sweep over Pickles UVV (3-3) with a 7-6 victory on Sunday. Vince Rooi drove in two runs and Kevin Weijgertse had a pair of hits for the Bussum squad.
Former Brewers prospect Simon Guehring hit a pair of long balls to help the Heidenheim Heidekoepfe remain unbeaten with an 8-3 win Sunday over the defending German champion Mainz Athletics. Heidenheim (8-0) took the series opener on Saturday evening, 8-7, on a walk-off error. American Clayton Freimuth (1-0) worked two shutout innings to earn the German Baseball-Bundesliga win.
Reigning Czech Extraleague champion Draci Brno continued their winning ways with a pair of wins over the Tempo Titans. Draci (9-0) opened the weekend series with a 1-0 victory on Friday as Martin Schneider tallied three RBIs. Arnost Dubovy went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair of scores to help the Dragons completed the sweep with a 5-2 triumph on Saturday.
Reigning French champion Rouen Huskies remained unbeaten with two victories against Paris University Club. Larry Infante had three hits and Owen Ozanich (4-0) pitched six innings of one-run ball to lead the Huskies to a 7-2 win Sunday in the front end of a French Division 1 doubleheader. Rouen (8-0) completed the sweep with an 8-4 decision in the second game as Leonel Cespedes had a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
The Tenerife Marlins continue to pace the Spanish Division De Honor with nine wins in their first 10 games. The Marlins pounded Baseball Navarra, 19-0, in the first game of Saturday’s twinbill as Lester Galvan homered and drove in five runs. Yorfrank Lopez (4-1) fanned eight over six shutout frames to earn the win. Tenerife (9-1) rolled to a 14-2 victory in the second game behind home runs from Jesus Ustariz, Richard Montiel and Jose Manuel Melendez.
