2017 European Baseball Update: American Rudy Owens Pitches Bologna past Nettuno
ITALY – American left-hander Rudy Owens threw one-hit ball over six scoreless innings to help UnipolSai Bologna (4-0) remain unbeaten Friday night in the Italian Baseball League with a 10-0 blowout win over Angel Service Nettuno (2-1).
The 29-year-old Arizona product struck out nine and issued two walks to win his second game in as many starts on Italian soil. Filippo Crepaldi worked two dominant relief frames to preserve the mercy rule shutout.
T&A San Marino (3-0) continued its winning ways last night with a 3-1 win over winless Rimini (0-3). Simone Albanese and Erik Epifano delivered clutch RBI hits and Carlos Quevedo (2-0) worked six stellar innings for the Titans.
Bologna and T&A San Marino will be eyeing sweeps on Saturday, while a pair of doubleheaders has Novara (2-0) clashing with Tommasin Padova (0-2) and Parma Clima (0-2) will be hosting Padule (0-2).
The L&D Amsterdam Pirates, HCAW and DSS opened the second week of action in the Dutch Hoofdklasse on Thursday night with solid wins. The Pirates (4-0) dealt reigning league champion Curacao Neptunus (0-1) a 5-1 setback as Kalian Sams homered and Rob Cordemans tossed five shutout frames. HCAW (3-1) got six strong innings from Jim Ploeger en route to a 7-1 victory against Pickles UVV (3-1), while DSS (1-3) nabbed its first win of the young season with a 7-5 win over De Glaskoning Twins (0-4). Games 2 and 3 of the three-game sets will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
Buchbinder Legionaere Regensburg (3-4) won their third straight German Baseball-Bundesliga game on Friday night with a 11-3 victory against the Stuttgart Reds as Niklas Rimmel (1-0) fanned eight over six innings in his season debut. Regensburg will be looking to complete the sweep today in Game 2. Other matchups includes Heidenheim Heidekoepfe (6-0) vs Mainz Athletics (4-2), Mannheim Tornados (3-3) vs Bad Homburg Hornets (1-5), Munich-Haar Disciples (4-2) vs Saarlouis Hornets (1-5), Cologne Cardinals (1-3) vs Solingen Alligators (1-3), Dortmund Wanderers (2-4) vs Hamburg Stealers (2-2) and the Paderborn Untouchables (1-1) vs Dohren Wild Farmers (3-1).
Draci Brno cruised to an easy 10-0 victory over the Tempo Titans on Friday night in the Czech Extraleague as Petr Minarik (3-0) picked up the win. The Arrows Ostrava clipped the Trebic Nuclears, 7-1, and Technika Brno rolled to a 13-5 win against Olympia Blansko in other league action last night. The six teams will play a series finale on Saturday, while a pair of twinbills are on slate pitting Kotlarka Prague against Skokani Olomouc and Eagles Prague battles Cardion Hrosi Brno.
Christian Tomsich collected 10 strikeouts and Baseball League Austria (BLA) unwrapped the 2017 season on Friday night as the Vienna Wanderers defeated the Diving Ducks Wiener Neustadt, 5-1. The two squads will play Game 2 on Saturday along with doubleheaders featuring Traiskirchen Grasshoppers vs Stock City Cubs, Attnang-Puchheim Athletics vs Kufstein Vikings and the Feldkirch Cardinals vs Hard Bulls.
The second week of the Belgian First Division features a pair of twinbills featuring the Brasschaat Braves (1-1) hosting the Borgerhout Squirrels (2-0), and Louvain La Neuve Phoenix (0-2) visiting the Mortsel Stars (1-1). The Deurne Spartans (2-0) will be on the road Saturday to meet the Royal Greys (0-2) before hosting the series finale on Sunday.
