Dutch Baseball: L&D Amsterdam Pirates, Pickles UVV Earn Weekend Sweeps
NETHERLANDS – The L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Pickles UVV have opened the 2017 Dutch Hoofdklasse season with three-game sweeps. The Pirates, which lost in six games to Curacao Neptunus in last year’s Holland Series, appear primed to make another championship run.
Amsterdam outscored DSS by a margin of 37 to 10 in a lopsided series that featured a trio of blowout wins. Left fielder Gilbert Lampe tallied three hits in each victory and leads the league with a .643 (9-for-14) batting average.
Lampe’s outfield mate – Remco Draijer – also opened the new season with a red-hot bat. The Pirates’ leadoff man is hitting .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles, a triple, home run and six RBIs.
Kyle Ward (1-0) was in top form with seven shutout frames. The 27-year-old southpaw is entering his 10th Dutch League season and has posted a 15-3 record over 166 2/3 innings since 2014.
PICKLES UVV KNOCK OFF TWINS
American import Bryce Cherry went 4-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs to break out of an early 2-for-8 funk. The Californian is hitting .462 (6-for-13) and batting in the No. 3 spot in one of Europe’s top leagues. Other UVV hitters feasting on opposing pitchers during the three-game set included Randy Daal (.429), Jelle Blaauw (.400), Sergino Martis (.400) and Tijmen Takke (.364).
Timo van Ancum (1-0) tossed one-run ball over six frames to earn the season-opening win last Thursday night. Reliever Jose Moreno (1-0) tallied the final six outs to pick up the win out of the bullpen in a 7-6 victory in Sunday’s series finale.
