Alfredo Despaigne is the one Cuban star who has not bolted for the United States for the greater gold. He has played a couple years in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines on a contract negotiated by the Cuban government but Chiba did not find themselves in a championship series.

For the life of the Cuban League Granma has also been lacking in a championship series. The lights are shining brighter now as the Stallions seek their first Cuban championship. How fitting to have Despaigne hit the go ahead homerun in the top of the tenth to give Granma the 4-3 win over the defending champions Ciego de Avila in the opening round championship game.
